One Night Only, For Your Eyes Only

6:29 PM

I'll probably be switching this blog over to a lifestyle blog one day just because I'm not nearly narcissistic enough to continuously take enough photos of me in outfits to keep up this blog. It's just awkward taking a photo of yourself by yourself unless you're on vacation. And I don't want to become part of that large population of people, who take photos of themselves all the time. For the most part, I only started taking outfit photos to document particularly creative outfits or really special pieces of clothing that I wanted to show off.

Always Busy Dreaming About Boys

4:34 PM

Visited the new trendy eating spot in Orange County, TRADE, with my friends. Since it was so hot, I wanted to keep things simple in a dress and boots. One thing I love about these sunglasses from Marc Jacobs is how they instantly dress up your outfit and take your look from grungy teenager to high fashion. If you're ever at TRADE, be sure to stop by Krisp Fresh Living for their heavenly iced blueberry macha lattes.

Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the Inbetween

11:39 AM

While in New York, I visited the Rei Kawakubo exhibit at the Met. It was a bit smaller than I expected after seeing the China exhibit they did for a previous Met Gala, but it was still amazing to see such a wide variety of Kawakubo's work on display and to be able to see her clothing up close. Additionally, it was great seeing a Japanese designer being introduced to a more mainstream audience. The best part really was seeing all of the clothing within inches of your face and being able to see the craftsmanship that went into each individual garment.

Ipsy vs Play! by Sephora

1:13 PM

Two of the biggest monthly makeup delivery boxes are Ipsy's Glam Bag and Play! by Sephora. Pictured are their July makeup bags (Top: Ipsy, Bottom: Sephora). For $10 each, they're both great deals. However, I prefer Ipsy's Glam Bag for its makeup focused curation while Sephora's was more skincare/hair care focused. I don't do much for my skin and hair other than what my dermatologist recommends, so I found that a lot of Sephora's products I wouldn't use in the first place. Additionally, Sephora's bag came with only sample sizes while Ipsy's did come with some full-size product. One big thing going for Ipsy is that when you sign up, you list out all your preferences for colors that you would wear. Sephora didn't so the one lipstick they sent me is a color I would never wear.
Overall, if you're trying to choose a box, I would sit down and consider what I wanted out of a box. Ipsy is more fun fashion with cutesy, personalized makeup bags and offers makeup from drugstore to high end. Sephora is more professional and only offers brands that they themselves carry. Additionally, Sephora sends out six beauty items, while Ipsy only sends out five. One thing that I love about Ipsy is that they consistently feature WOC and men in their makeup, while Sephora has mostly been white women (and the men have mostly stuck to skincare).

No love, they'll never break the shape we take

6:14 PM

This jacquard skirt is everything. I've said it before and I'll say it again - a shiny jacquard/baroque print skirt can make all the difference in your look. They're daring and always attract attention. What I like about this outfit is it has a lot going on with the printed skirt, lace inserts, cutout booties and color-block sunglasses but since they're all in the same color palette, it doesn't feel overwhelming (plus, it's super comfy and good for warm weather).

First Ipsy Bag

11:08 AM

Ipsy is a personalized monthly make-up delivery service started by makeup vlogger, Michelle Phan. Originally, I started just because my friend needed to rack up points for her account and if I signed up, she'd get them. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised at the array/quality of the items and all for $10. In the pack, there was: Urban Decay's Afterglow 8-Hour Powder (Sin), treStiQue Mini Matte Lip Crayon (Tuscan Wine), Luxie Dreamcatcher Precision Foundation Face Brush, Hey Honey Lip Balm in Besame Mucho, and Starlooks Artist Edition Eyeliner. The only product I wasn't totally nuts about was the highlighter from Urban Decay because I just didn't notice much of a difference when I put it on. The lip crayon and brush are phenomenal though.

Some Things Are Long Forgotten

6:44 PM

This skirt is one of my favorite pieces of clothing. I love its bold pattern, its glitter factor, and the straight silhouette. Originally, I was going to keep everything else simple, only pairing it with black items, so that the skirt could stand out. However, I was feeling a little bit more daring and wanted to wear something that would hopefully grab TokyoFashion's interest if I were walking along the streets, so I added a key chain I picked up a long time ago in Japan and a jacket cluttered with patches.

Style Icon

Style Icon: Patrick Wolf

7:45 PM

Not only does Patrick Wolf create beautiful music and art, but he also brings dandy-esque outfits to the modern age with sharp suiting and bold patterns. What I love about Patrick Wolf and try to work into my wardrobe is his constant take on fun blazers that go beyond the dull office look. If his take on menswear doesn't inspire, maybe try taking a bit of his whimsy and incorporate it into your look with bold garden prints and layered wool coats over shorts.

So I Keep Talking About Eighteen; Cause I Can't Let Go of the Same Dream

8:24 PM

Ever since Coach debuted their RTW collection, I've been a fan of their fun, youthful designs mixed with quirky patterns. And it doesn't hurt that their collections are all wearable AF. That combined with my love for how @coco_pinkprincess pulls off bombers led to this bomber from Coach joining my extensive collection of jackets. And with gift cards, sales, etc. I ended up walking away with this jacket for only $45.

Travel

Shopping Guide: Tokyo

7:09 PM

Whenever people ask me where my favorite place to travel is, I always respond with Japan. Part of the reason why is because Japan has such great shopping. Yeah Paris, New York, and other big cities have great shopping, but from what I've seen it's all either standard brands like Topshop, H&M, and the like or too expensive. On the other hand, most shopping in Japan tends to be less expensive coming from either new or trendier brands. Of course, Japan has all the luxury brands, but its their street fashion that stands out the most. For those of you wondering to do, here are the best place in Tokyo:
Shibuya - Shibuya is definitely one of the most popular districts for shopping. It features tons of trendy stores like WEGO, WC, and so on. Part of the fun of Shibuya is that every street is crowded with stores selling clothing, makeup, stationary, and even electronics. With so many stores, you'll definitely find something you like. If not, head over to Shibuya 109, a shopping mega-plaza crammed with a plethora of brands. Shibuya 109 alone could take up a whole afternoon's worth of shopping.
Takeshita Dori - Takeshita Dori is the main street for shopping in Harajuku. Although a lot of the fashion is aimed at tweens, it's still a fun place to check out the more avant garde trends going on and pick up fun accessories (cat-patterned tights, backpacks shaped like wolves, pom pom earrings, etc.) While you're there, be sure to grab a crepe from Marion Crepes and check out Bodyline's store, which showcases a wide range of cheap lolita and gothic fashions alongside cosplay.
Tokyu Hands - Tokyu Hands is spread out throughout Japan, so be sure to drop by one to pick up stationary, knick knacks, and even accessories. When I was there, I loved the big variety of accessories like backpacks and cute ear phones plus all the stationary of course (and Japanese stationary is high key the best out there).

A post shared by FUNKTIQUE (@funktiquetokyo) on
Funktique - Although I didn't get to visit Funktique, it's at the top of my list for when I go back. First of all, the people who own it are @Coco_pinkprincess's parents! And second of all, it has a crazy selection of vintage, DIYed, and more.
Cat Street - If you're in the mood to walk from Harajuku to Shibuya, it's not that difficult and you can take Cat Street down to do so. Even so, you should definitely check out this strip of shopping for trendier and funkier clothes unique to Tokyo's street style. One of my favorite stores when I visited was Candy Stripper, which had surprisingly cute clothes for a good price. For the most part, the shops along this street are a bit more expensive than Shibuya or Harajuku, so expect more boutique-y options.
